Until Nigerians recognised that skilled birth attendant is important, mothers and pregnant women will continue to die. Ondo state Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju made this known during a two day workshop for Health Rangers from the Northern Senatorial District of the state at Oka-Akoko.
He said that mothers and pregnant women must know the
importance of skilled birth attendant and that they are trained to do the job
they are doing thereby trusting them.
The Commissioner said that women are not dying because of
diseases that cannot be treated, but because of ignorance. He said that is why
the Health Rangers which comprises of Community Health Workers (CHEW) are been
trained rigoriously to be able to take sound and quality health care to the
doors of the pregnant women so as to keep them safe.
Dr. Adeyanju posited that the training of health rangers
becomes imperative so as to keep women alive and healthy for the development of
the state. He said the state government would not relent in its effort
to see that maternal death is brought to the barest minimum. Dr. Adeyanju re-instated government’s effort to achieve MDG
4 and 5 before 2015 saying ‘it is achieveable’.
Participants were taken through different health workshops
on ‘Abiye’ safe motherhood.
