Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju


He was born almost four decades ago to the family of late Alhaji Adeyanju and Mrs. M. Adeyanju of Ondo town in Ondo state.

He attended Adeyemi Primary School, Ondo where he passed his primary school leaving certificate to gain admission into the prestigious Saint Joseph’s College, Ondo, Ondo state. He then proceeded to the premier University of Ibadan to study medicine and qualified as a doctor. He obtained Master of Public Health from OAU Ile Ife.

He started his career as a house officer at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure and proceeded to do his mandatory National Youth Service at Abakaliki after which he returned to Ondo state and picked up an employment with Ondo state Government. He was at different times state coordinator for HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, the General Manager, World Bank-assisted Community and Social Development Agency and now the State Commissioner for Health.


ACHIEVEMENTS


National Youth Services: During his National Youth Service, he embarked on series of community development projects which included; establishment of staff clinic in the Afrikpo Local Government Council headquarters in Ebonyi State. He also carried out series of health talks and free medical services for people aged 40 years and above.


State Coordinator HIV/AIDS: the various activities embarked upon led to a remarkable decline in the prevalence of HIV/AIDS  from 6.7% 2001 to 2.3% in 2003.


State Coordinator, Malaria Control Programme: while holding this position, he embarked on series of programmes that earned him recognition to represent the country in Bangkok, Thailand.


Special Assistant to the Governor on Health: as the special assistant to the governor he was privileged to design Abiye Safe Motherhood programme and coordinate its implementation. The programme is recognized by the World Bank as benchmark for the African continent in achieving MDG 4 and 5.


General Manager: as the General Manager of Ondo State and Community and Social Development Agency, he established the agency and put a structure in place that will ensure access of the poor communities to services of human development index. 50 community development projects had been formulated which translated to 150 micro projects among which 24 were being supervised to deliver service.


Commissioner for Health: as the Commissioner for Health, he sees to the well being of over 3 million people of Ondo state. He has seen to the scale-up of the Abiye Safe motherhood programme in all the 18 Local Government Areas of the state. He is working hard to ensure the successful take off of the State Emergency Medical Services. In line with the government desire to provide exceptionally qualitative health care for the people of the state where they live, work and play, he launched ‘Your Health, Our Concern’ to cater for the health of all Ondo state workers at the various MDAs. Under his leadership, the immunization coverage of the state has reached an all time high of 114%. The state has remained polio free. He mobilized perhaps the biggest and most effective Medical Mission in the history of the state in collaboration with Rotary International Foundation. The Mother and Child Hospital, Trauma centre and Information Centre all at Ondo are near completion.
He has attended series of training both at local and international levels. Some of which included ASCON in Badagry, Lagos Business School among others.

Since he commenced practice he has won several awards and recognitions from several institutions in Nigeria. These include NYSC State Award, 2008 Rotary Entrepreneur of the year, Ansarudeen Youth Muslim Torchbearer, Excellence in Community health by Rotary club, Akure. To his credit was the Ondo State Excellent Performance in Healthcare Delivery etc.
Dr. Dayo Adeyanju belongs to many associations which include: Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), American Public Health Association, Global Council on Health, Aristocrat-Club 90, NASFAT etc
He has travelled far and wide within and outside Nigeria for training , conferences and vacations.

He is happily married with children.
